Early Spring in Boston: Six Ways to Enjoy the Blue Skies and Sunshine

Last weekend’s sunshine and lighter temperatures offered Boston a welcome reprieve from what’s turned out to be very snowy winter. After just a few consecutive days of blue skies and chirping birds, most Bostonians couldn’t help but dream of an early spring. To provide some springtime inspiration, we’ve gathered our favorite activities for celebrating this season of renewal.

Pick your favorite, hope for no more snow, and bring a jacket just in case!

See the First Blooms at the Boston Public Garden

Visit America’s oldest public botanical garden and enjoy the first blooms and exotic shrubbery. After strolling through the garden, take a 15-minute cruise on one of the iconic Swan Boats. Weather permitting, the Swan Boats are open seven days a week with no reservation required. Tickets are $3 for adults, $1.50 for children, and $2 for seniors.

Patio Bars

A tell-tale sign that spring is headed our way is the opening of local patio bars. Open-air seating is one of the best ways to enjoy the atmosphere of Boston’s nightlife. Bring a light jacket and head down to some of our favorites like Charlie’s Kitchen, Noir or Marliave.

Opening Pitch at Fenway

Watch the opening pitch at Fenway Park on Friday, April 4th, 2014 as the Red Sox take on the Milwaukee Brewers for their home opener. This season promises to be a great one for last year’s World Series Champions.

Stroll around Jamaica Pond

Visit the shining jewel at the center of Boston’s “Emerald Necklace”: Jamaica Pond. Located in Jamaica Plain, the pond offers trails through the woods and along the water. If the weather is especially nice, bring your life jacket and utilize the kayaks, sailboats, or rowboats that are available for rent.

Celebrate the Boston Marathon

Every third Monday in April brings Patriot’s Day and Bostonians know that Patriot’s Day brings the Boston Marathon. This year the marathon falls on April 21st. Join in on the celebration by picking a viewing spot on Boylston Street to watch the runners and enjoy the festivities. This year will be an especially momentous occasion for Boston in celebrating the physical prowess, determination, and strength of the runners and this city.
